KIDS FOR THE CURE

Kids for the Cure Online Registration is now CLOSED!  We have reached the 750 participant limit.

At Komen Atlanta, we realize that a diagnosis of cancer affects more than just the patient.  For every woman or man diagnosed with breast cancer, there are often children involved who are also affected by the diagnosis - the patient's children, grandchildren, nieces/nephews, neighbors, friends and others.  These children should not feel powerless against the disease.  By joining Kids for the Cure, children can feel that they are making a difference and becoming part of the Cure.  We strive to make the Kids for the Cure area fun, educational and a place where children can realize that they are not alone.

Register NOW for Kids for the Cure!  Children 12 and under can register for the Race for the Cure for just $15, which includes a youth-sized t-shirt for the first 750 kids and the option to participate in either the 5K or 1 Mile Family Walk.  Kids for the Cure participants will also gain access to the special Bright Starts Kids Korral in the Expo area following the Race by showing their Race Number.  PARENTAL SUPERVISION IS REQUIRED THROUGHOUT THE RACE AND IN THE BRIGHT STARTS KIDS KORRAL.

**Kids for the Cure registration is limited to the first 750 kids, so register early!

Kids for the Cure Honorary Chair:
Patty Vaccaro

Patty’s Story:

On May 1, 2008, I was told the news that all women fear, "Mrs. Vaccaro.  You have breast cancer."  Things move fast after your diagnosis is made – surgical consults, reconstruction options, oncology consults, telling family, friends, bosses and all the while trying not to breakdown from our fear of Cancer.  I learned so much throughout my ordeal, and while I wouldn’t want to go through this ever again, I can’t tell you that I regret it.  I learned:

  • That the hardest thing I’ve ever faced was telling my 9-year old that I had cancer and why she didn’t need to be afraid.
  • The strength of my husband, daughter, family & friends - their love and care was much needed, humbling & heartfelt.
  • That attitude is EVERYTHING!  I’m blessed with a positive attitude and always knew that God would get me through this.
  • Early detection saved my life.  My mammogram detected the tumors exactly one year from the date of my last test.
  • You have to allow yourself the time to heal – it can take a while.  But, it’s really a small window of time compared to the rest of your life.
  • That the medical professionals in the field of breast cancer are some of the kindest people I’ve ever met.  The entire team that took care of me at Piedmont Hospital was outstanding.
  • That I now have an obligation to help others.

Kids for the Cure is a great way for me to payback some of what I’ve been given.  By getting our children involved and educated, we can help raise much needed money towards finding a cure for this disease.  My dreams will come true if my daughter, her children, and yours never have to worry about getting this disease.

  Ali, Dan and Patty
